Our Flag

1½" finished square
20" x 26" block with seam allowance
  Cut for one block:
 
1. 1 stars 11" square
2. 3 red and 3 white 2" strip
3. 1 red 2" x 15½" strip

Directions:

1. Sew the selvage to selvage 2" strips into a set of strips, alternating red and white. From this set of strips cut a 15½" section and a 26" section.

2. Assemble according to the piecing diagram.

Sawtooth Star

1½" finished square
6½" block with seam allowance
  Cut for one block:
 
1. 1 center square 3½" square
2. 4 background 2" x 3½" rectangle
3. 8 star and 4 background 2" square

Directions:

1. Place a star 2" square on one end of the background 2" x 3½" rectangle. Sew a diagonal seam as shown. Outside the stitching, trim fabric to a ¼" seam allowance. Press to the triangle. Place another background 2" square on the other end and sew the opposite diagonal.
   
 

2. Assemble according to the piecing diagram.

  Cut for one block:
 
1. 1 coat and 1 background 37/8" square
2. 1 hat and 2 background 3½" x 5" rectangle

4. 2 background 2¾" x 11" rectangle
5. 1 coat 2¾" x 9½" rectangle
6. 1 coat 2¾" x 5¾" rectangle

9. 2 coat and 2 pants 2" x 8" rectangle

1. Place the background and coat 37/8" squares right sides together. Draw a diagonal line on the back of the lightest fabric. Stitch ¼" away from the line on both sides. Cut on the drawn line to produce two 3½" half-squares. (shoulders) 1. Shoulders

2. Place a coat 2" square on a corner of the beard 3½" square. Sew a diagonal seam as shown. Outside the stitching, trim fabric to a ¼" seam. Sew another coat 2" square at the opposite diagonal on an adjacent corner. (beard) 2. Beard

4. Sew a boot 2" square on one end of a 2¾" x 11" background rectangle with a diagonal seam as shown. Trim and press to the dark. Happy 4th of July

1½" finished square
Quilt with borders: 41" x 45½"

1. Piece one Uncle Sam block, one Flag and eight Sawtooth Star blocks.

2 .Cut from setting strip fabric:

1 2" x 12½" right of stars
3 2" x 32" right, left of man and flag

Sew the star blocks into two rows of four stars each and sew the rows together. Add the small setting strip on the right end of the stars. Sew the flag above the stars. Sew a large setting strip on either side of Uncle Sam and on the right side of the flag-star section. Sew the two sections together. Add a 2" strip at the top and bottom. Then add a final 3½" border to complete the wall hanging.
